"Crushed by Isabelle Huppert’s star power: Romeo Castellucci’s reimagining of the classic play by Jean Racine is all about the lead performer. " The New York Times
Grand master of the theatrical Gesamtkunstwerk, Romeo Castellucci returns with a radical adaptation of Jean Racine’s Bérénice. This iconic 17th-century French tragedy is stripped down to a magnificent monologue, performed by the equally iconic actress Isabelle Huppert. Castelucci distils the central love triangle between Bérénice, the Roman Emperor Titus and Antiochus down to its dark core. He shows an isolated woman on the edge of the abyss whose silence is as deafening as the sound of her voice. With the help of Scott Gibbons’ music, the director creates a universe populated by phantoms in which Bérénice appears to be drowning. Castellucci’s adaptation explores the dark side of Racine’s brilliant Alexandrians and thus reveals the topicality of this classical text.
